A comparison between Sony Microvault and Sandisk Ultra Micro USB drives, July 27, 2014

The Sony Microvault USB Flash Drive and SanDisk Ultra Micro USB 2.0 OTG Flash Drive are very similar in terms of functionality. So which one is a better product? I own both and here is my comparison between them:

    [Compatibility]
Both drives are immediately recognized when inserted to the micro-USB port of my cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.4.2). The ‘My Files’ app pops up automatically, showing ‘/storage/UsbDriveA’ (this device). I can then navigate between Device storage (phone’s internal memory), SD memory card, and the external USB drive. It is very intuitive to copy or move files around.

When tested on an older tablet (D2-721) running Android 4.1.1, the Sony 32GB drive is recognized, but the Sandisk 64GB drive is not. This is probably because the 64GB drive is formatted in exFAT, which is unsupported by older Android operating systems. The 32GB drive is formatted in FAT32, which is universally supported.

I also tested both drives without problems on my computers running Win7 Home and Win7 Pro. On an old computer running Win XP, however, the 64GB drive is not recognized. Again, this is not the fault of the drive, but because exFAT is not supported by XP natively.

    [Mechanical design]
Both the Sony and Sandisk drives are very compact, with the Sony version being 1/4 inch shorter. See the photo I uploaded to ‘Customer Images’ for a side-by-side comparison. Note that both drives allow attachment of lanyards, but none is provided.

    – The Sony drive has a twist-off cap for the micro-USB port, and nothing for the USB port.
    – The Sandisk drive has retractable covers for both micro-USB and USB ports. Note that they do not prevent dust from entering the opening of ports, but at least they can prevent the metal parts from scratching your cell phone or tablet.

    [LED indicator]
    – Sony unit has a green LED that lights up when the drive is being accessed.
    – Sandisk unit does not have any indicator lights.

    [Data Transfer Speed]
I measured the sequential Read and Write speeds for both drives on my computer, using the CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 x64 benchmark program. The Sony drive shows about 10% faster in Read and 30% faster in Write:
    – Sandisk Ultra OTG: Read=20.7MB/s, Write=9.6MB/s
    – Sony Microvault: Read=23.4MB/s, Write=12.9MB/s

I also measured the data transfer rate manually, by copying large video files to and from my Samsung Galaxy S3. The outcome is again in favor of Sony:
    – Sandisk drive: Read=12.1MB/s, Write=5.1MB/s
    – Sony drive: Read=15.3MB/s, Write=8.8MB/s

    [Bottom Line]
Which drive is better, you ask? That’s a tough question. The Sony Microvault is slightly more compact and quite a bit faster. The Sandisk Ultra drive has a more protective case and is cheaper per GB. So it is a toss-up. You cannot go wrong with either brand, anyway.

    Super sweet!, February 19, 2014
    By
    A Recruiter (Chicago, IL) –

Just got this at Best Buy for $30 on sale. Plugged it into my SG3 and was detected immediately. The phone screen opened up to the folder layout of the thumb drive. At that point (as I’d never backed up my phone ever), I wasn’t quite sure how to proceed. I used the directory layout to navigate to my phone files, hit the option button which had the Select All option, hit the drop down button on the top right which gave the Copy or Move actions, selected Move, and — here’s the sweet part — I was able to get back quickly to the thumb drive directory. On the top right, I selected the option of something like (I did this last night and don’t clearly remember all the details.) “Move here”, and it moved 960 pics on its own. It took about 20 -30 minutes, though I wasn’t exactly keeping track. Make sure you fully charge your phone before plugging the thumb drive in, cuz it’s the same microusb port and if you run out of charge (like I almost did) before the move process finishes, goodness knows what could have happened to my files. Maybe it’s safer to do a copy, then delete the phone files after. It took me about 5 minutes of manual effort altogether to move 10GB. Popped the drive to a Mac Air afterwards and files showed up immediately. So this drive was recognized by Android and Mac OS. I didn’t plug it into a my Windows desktop to test compatibility, but the package shows that it should be compatible. I think this is better than a flash, since I didn’t have to open my phone innards, gingerly pop in the SD, transfer data, pull it out, and plug it into an SD reader on a bigger system for downloading. Once downloaded and the files cleaned out of this, I can also reuse this gizmo for other smart devices. No issues or problems (but pay attention to my note on charging your device beforehand). Love it!

Doa or Fake, i do not know. UPDATE: New one works just dandy., February 10, 2015

    K. Cart (Fort Wayne, IN) –

The flash drive could not be recognized by my Windows 8.1 or my Samsung S5. It would acknowledge it being plugged in with the device noise, but could not be accessed by either. I downloaded HP USB format utility to check and see if it was just not formatted or if there was an error in it. It showed up as a Generic 1MB drive…yes…1MB. Any attempt to format it ended is failure as it said it could not be formatted. I do not know if I got a knock off or a defective product. I will update if the situation changes.
Physically it is incredibly tiny, from the pictures you can see that it small in the palm of my hand, although my hand is a little larger due to being attached to a little larger guy. I found that it is small enough i have trouble operating it but that is not a negative of the device, just the way i am built.

    Update 3/12/2015:
I did a product return, sending the old one back in using the labels Amazon provided for me. Easy enough. They had sent the second one out even before the old one was in the mailbox. This one works fine. Great file capacity. A little on the small and light side, just waiting for me to loose it. Not case friendly as you will see in my updated photos, just sits and laughs at a Samsung S5 with a otterbox on it. Since I now have a working one, well worth the $. Would recommend if you like to transfer or back up files/photos/music between your cell phone, tablet, and computer and just really dont want to drag 3 different cords around.
