It’s come to my attention that many people don’t really understand what they are buying when they buy a power bank, also known as an external battery. So I’d like to start by briefly covering what a power bank is and what the various terms mean that are used when discussing them. If you’re already an expert on this topic, please skip the next two paragraphs to read my experience with this product. If you simply want the summary, go to the last paragraph.

A power bank is nothing more than an external battery that you can use to power and / or charge just about any device that has a cord that connects to a power source via a standard USB port. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and configurations, but there are really only three things to look for when looking at performance. One is the number of USB ports on the device, another is the amperage (listed in milliamps or amps) available through each port and lastly, the total amount of energy stored in the battery, which may be referred to as “capacity” for which the units are usually referred to in milliamps per hour or mAh. If you have a newer Android smartphone or tablet that you want to charge, then you want a power bank that offers a 2 amp USB port. If you have an iPod or iPhone, you can generally get away with a single 1 amp port, but I always recommend having at least one 2 amp port. A power bank with more than one port will, in theory, allow you to charge more than one device at a time. The thing to keep in mind when shopping for a power bank is that manufacturer claims are often inflated to at least some degree. The most often exaggerated feature is the mAh capacity of a power bank and total amperage output is a close second. Capacity is important because more capacity allows you more device “up-time” per charge on the bank.

Over the past several years, I’ve been asked by a variety of sellers to test and review their power banks, and while I always did my best to accurately review each item, it was impossible to get precise, quantitative data on the performance of the banks because the only way to do so is if you have proper testing equipment. You can give anecdotal evidence like “It charged my tablet quickly,” but you really can’t measure the mAh capacity and the amperage put out at the USB ports with any kind of accuracy. Writing informative and accurate reviews is extremely important to me, so I’ve since acquired testing equipment that allows me to get precise and accurate data regarding the capabilities of a power bank or charger; and I have to admit I’m excited to finally know without a doubt that I’m giving accurate information about a product.

All that being said, here’s what I found with the Mopower 12000mAh Power Bank…

It has 2 USB ports… one 1 amp and one 2 amp, a power button, a mini flashlight, a four light blue power level indicator and roughly measures 5.375″ x 2.375″ x .875″.

I received my sample of this product and fully charged the device, which took a couple hours because it was only half charged on arrival.

I tested the power bank using the same methodology I use for testing all such devices. Using a USB Load Inducer, I placed a 2.2 amp load on the 2 amp USB port and was able to draw that power for 5 minutes without issues. I repeated the process for the 1 amp port, putting a 1.2 amp load on it for five minutes without incident. Next I used the load inducer and a power monitor that measures total power consumed (mAh), and placed 2 amp load on the power bank through the 2 amp port, and it provided 6,750 mAh at 5 volts (9,121 mAh at 3.7 volts). I charged the unit back up and ran the test again with the power bank ultimately putting out 6,940 mAh at 5 volts (9,378 mAh at 3.7 volts).

Power banks generally use a 3.7 volt battery, as do most cell phones, but the USB standard is 5.0 volts, so the energy must be converted from 3.7 volts at the power bank to 5 volts for output, and then back to 3.7 volts for use by the device being charged. Because of the voltage conversion and other factors involved, there will always be some energy lost, so no power bank will put out 100% of stated capacity to the device to be charged.

In summation, this power bank is capable of putting out 2.2 amps (more than advertised) and it will easily put out a steady 2 amps (and maybe more) for the duration of the charge, which is more than enough to charge any device you might have. Having a power button helps keep the bank from slow draining when not in use, and the blue LED lights indicating percent of power remaining and charge status is definitely a plus. 9,400 mAh is enough to greatly extend the battery life of a tablet, and charge pretty much any phone three or four times. My testing indicates this power bank puts out 78% of advertised capacity and that puts it somewhere in the range of “good” as far as actual output versus stated. Anything above 90% of stated…

Recharge your phone up to 5 times basically anywhere, August 23, 2015

    PROs
+ 12,000mAh capacity: This power bank packs a lot of power. 12,000mAh is enough to recharge an iPhone about 5 times and an iPad about 1.5 times. This makes the unit great to have on hand when you’re traveling and won’t have access to a power outlet for a couple days.
+ 4 Blue LEDs: There are four blue LEDs that indicate how much charge is remaining in the unit. Just tap the power button to light them up.
+ Compact size: The power bank is portable, making it easy to charge your device basically anywhere. While it may be too big for your pocket, it fits nicely in a backpack or laptop bag.
+ 2 USB ports: This allows you to charge two devices at the same time. For example, you could charge your phone and a tablet at the same time, or you could share the second port with a friend to charge both of your phones simultaneously.

    CONs
    – AC charger not included: This is typical with most power banks, but I thought I would point out that there is no AC charger included with this unit. You can likely use the power brick that came with your phone or tablet. In a pinch you could use your computer’s USB ports, but recharging can be extremely slow from a computer USB port (especially if it is an older USB 2.0 port).

Overall, this is a compact power bank that has a large capacity. This makes it ideal for a weekend camping trip or to have on hand during power outages.

Solid backup battery, October 17, 2015

As far as power banks go, this is a nice hand held sized one. It recharges via MicroUSB and a cable is provided. There are two output ports for standard USB cables. The power bank has four blue LEDs that indicate the amount of juice left in it. While this is a little too big to carry around in your pocket, it’s perfect for sliding into your laptop bag as a backup. You do have to depress the power button in order to start charging your devices. In testing how quickly the battery provides power I discovered that with a standard Lightning cable it charges approximately 1% per minute. It’s a solid battery.
