DEV 33# Glide Gear 33″ Video Camera Tripod Slider

DEV 33# Glide Gear 33

The Dev 33 Slider was developed to allow anyone the ability to create Feature Film quality production shots within a reasonable budget. With aircraft grade, heavy-duty, CNC machined with tight tolerances, precision extruded industrial grade anodized aluminum construction, self-lubricating glide rails, spirit level & tension adjustment, the DEV provides more bang for your buck than any other slider on the market in it’s price range. The DEV Video Camera Slider can be used as a stand alone unit with the detachable feet, or you can even attach it directly to your tripod. The slider system will raise your video height approximately 2inches from the ground. The DEV series rail is perfect for small to mid size rigs including DSLR setups with shorter lenses. Due to the new patented technology of the self-lubricating rails and plastic bearings, the Glidegear Carriage requires 4-5 times less force to move than the traditional Drylin liners and similar slider units. Indeed, the Glidegear slider, with loosened tension knob, can move with gravity as you tilt the system at an angle against the horizon, or it can be adjusted to have your exact amount of resistance. The Glidegear DEV Series Slider has an open architecture design, that uses individual, greaseless self-lubricating plastic bearings and liners that can quickly and easily be swapped out if required. Good slider but be aware of balance problems, March 12, 2015

I got this 33inch slider when its price was $59 and for this price, I think the slider is an excellent entry-level slider and even some semi-pros might find it useful. It arrived really well packaged. The carriage slides very smoothly and I would summarize its overall performance as good. However, there are a couple of problems that I think you should be aware of:

    – the tension adjustment knob is not suited for adjusting tension. Once you start using it and introducing tension, the carriage doesn’t slides smoothly anymore. I would say the knob has more use for locking the carriage in place during transportation rather than for adjusting resistance when using the slider.
    – balance problems – the manufacturer specifies the slider’s maximum load is 9kg (optimal performance 0-6kg). I use it with D610 + Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 on a small ballhead. The camera’s and lens’s total weight is 1.8 kg (so well below the max. weight). When you point the camera to the side, the camera’s weight is not centered on the slider which creates 2 problems: 1) because the slider’s legs are very narrow and small, the slider falls over. You’ll have to hold it down with your hand but it might introduce shake to your footage. 2) the second problem in this scenario is with the carriage itself. Because of the weight imbalance, the carriage puts extra weight on one side of the slider. Adjusting the tension knob won’t help and you won’t be able to smoothly operate the slider. The good news is that there is a solution to both 1) and 2) – you’ll need to buy a focusing rail/micro positioning plate (I got the cheapest one for about $11). It will allow you to center the weight on the carriage.

Overall, I think it’s a good product for the price I bought it ($59) but be aware that you’ll need to invest a bit more to buy a focusing rail if you want to use the slider with a DSLR and to avoid problems with weight imbalance.

Great Function for the Price!, April 13, 2015

For the price, I thought this glider was tops in terms of functionality, smoothness and expectations. It does require some practice in pushing it to obtain a pro level of smoothness. Also, I’d recommend using a very heavy duty video tripod under this to ensure stability. Using it on a table top is fine and worked well, but you have limited tilt there, obviously. Another bonus to note: The 1/4″20 slider plate screw can, itself, be screwed off to reveal the standard sized screw head which would fit into the bottom of most DSLR or point and shoot cameras. This discovery saved me from having to buy a $60 adapter. Had I not discovered that, I would have given this one less star. Also, the glider-to-tripod connection point is 1/4″20, so it fits right on a light stand. If you haven’t a light stand, you’ll need to get an adapter piece. Connecting the whole apparatus to a tripod is awkward, and I probably look like a helicopter setting it up. If this thing was pricier, they would probably include an easier means of attaching it. Still… for the price, I can look like a helicopter, I don’t care. Great gizmo, and footage looks amazing.

Love love love. I am very much a rookie when it comes to photography. Not like the professionals but i wanted to broaden my horizon and giving photography a shot. A few of my friends who have been in this industry suggested i get a few things including a tripod slider. After reading many reviews and research, I gave this glider a try. Great price for all it does. The adjuster knob was a little tough in the beginning, but after a few usage, it adjusts with ease. Have gotten a few great shots with my camera and camcorder.
